The Torchlight Program
Final Call For Interns
Summer 2012

For Immediate Attention
During Drop/Add Week
Between Monday, May 14th-Friday, May 18th

Please interview this week at the Torchlight Center for placement into internship opportunities in an independent motion picture marketing company as well as opportunities in assisting in the preparation for this year’s Tallahassee Film Festival and Student Veteran Film Festival.

Contact us as soon as possible so that we may arrange an internship interview for you. The internship is available to graduate and undergraduate FSU students. Summer 2012 internship interview dates begin immediately during summer session drop/add week, Monday May 14th– Friday May 18th.

All interviews should be scheduled by contacting my assistant: Gayle Gari via e-mail request: pcasstgayle@gmail and copied to my personal email: PaulCohenFilm@gmail.com

In the event you do not receive a prompt reply do not hesitate to call me directly on my cell number (646) 244-5598 and/or Gayle Gari at (845) 300-0268.

All interviews will take place at the Torchlight Center, 387 Commerce Boulevard/ Midway, Florida 32343. Driving directions are at the end of this document. The Center is approximately 10 miles from campus (90W to Commerce Blvd.).

Students wishing to intern in the summer will have the opportunity to add an internship course, possibly for credit from their college, before the university drop/add deadline is over this summer session. Please read more about scheduling an interview for an internship in a motion picture marketing company through the Torchlight Program and its association with motion picture industry professionals.

I am currently offering a non-paying internship that will allow students the opportunity to participate in my professional entrepreneurial motion picture marketing and distribution activities. This internship requires a minimum total weekly attendance of 15 hours, with commitment for each weekday, Monday through Friday, with flexible hours agreed upon for each day, to accommodate your schedule. Additionally, you will be required to provide a laptop computer and drive or have arranged for transportation to and from the Torchlight Center.

Selected interns will work on the release and marketing of a number of new feature length films and other industry opportunities during this upcoming semester. This summer’s release line-up promises to be exciting for my interning students.

For example, interns in my company after being introduced through the Torchlight Program this past spring 2012 semester have had the opportunity to market on social media platforms; Trespass, a thriller directed by Joel Schumacher, starring Nicholas Cage and Nicole Kidman; The 2012 Academy Award nominated documentary, Hell and Back Again, directed by Danfung Dennis; How To Grow A Band, a feature documentary about the musicians of the Bluegrass band The Punch Brothers (featured on The Hunger Games soundtrack), by Mark Meatto; Good For Nothing, a western genre feature filmed in New Zealand, directed by Mike Wallis; and Puncture, a law drama about a drug-addicted lawyer who takes on a health supply corporation while battling his own personal demons, directed by Adam Kassen and Mark Kassen, starring Chris Evans.

Moving into this summer semester we will continue to market many of these titles in addition to new titles both mainstream and independent including:

The winner of numerous film festival awards and a real crowd pleaser, Wild Horse Wild Ride, a documentary that tells the story of the Extreme Mustang Makeover Challenge, an annual contest that dares 100 people to each tame a totally wild mustang in order to get it adopted into a better life beyond federal corrals, directed by Alexandra Dawson and Greg Gricus; Snow on Tha Bluff, a reality/drama film featuring real Atlanta bad boy and crack dealer Curtis Snow, directed by Damon Russell; and Music From The Big House, directed by Bruce McDonald, a documentary featuring Rita Chiarelli, Canada’s Queen of the Blues and her pilgrimage to the birthplace of the blues, Louisiana State Maximum Security Penitentiary a.k.a Angola Prison – what used to be the bloodiest prison in America. Rita’s trip turns into a historic jailhouse performance.

This year the Torchlight Program has once again invited Geoffrey Gilmore (former director of the Sundance Film Festival and currently Chief Creative Officer for Robert De Niro’s Tribeca Enterprises) to present at the annual Seven Days of Opening Nights, a new independent feature film; the gripping drama Being Flynn, directed by Paul Weitz and starring Robert De Niro, Julianne Moore and Paul Dano. Torchlight’s interning students helped to arrange and manage the presentation of this Seven Days event, as they have for the past 4 years.

In anticipation for this year’s Tallahassee Film Festival (November 2012) a number of the Torchlight Program’s interning students will be working during the summer session, along with festival staff, to develop this year’s program. Select student interns will also be chosen to work on this year’s Student Veteran Film Festival to take place on the campus of FSU at Ruby Diamond Hall.

The Torchlight Program and its spring interns, as part of its new affiliation with the Tallahassee Film Festival, presented The Big Fix to a capacity audience at the AMC 20 earlier this spring. The film was an Official Selection at the Cannes Film Festival in 2011. The Big Fix is a documentary that explores the root causes of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill of 2010. It shows the devastation the spill caused and is still causing, and uncovers a vast network of corruption.

The filmography below outlines some of the opportunities students and interns have had while interning in my marketing company and/or through presenting Torchlight Film Series presentations. Information may be viewed by clicking the following links:

The Torchlight Program at the College of Motion Picture Arts was created to educate students in current and emerging motion picture business practices with a focus on marketing, financing, and distribution strategies that have proven to be effective in releasing feature films. Through strategic relationships with industry professionals, the Torchlight Program facilitates unique internship opportunities, with industry, that provide students with hands-on experience with motion picture production and distribution companies.

Whether you’re interested in traditional marketing, graphic design, social media marketing and promotion, developing your professional writing skills for social media platforms, still photography, filming, editing, and distribution, there may be an opportunity to find an appropriate internship opportunity through the Torchlight Program and its association with companies and individuals within the entertainment industry.

The Torchlight Program anticipates it will continue to expand the voice of contemporary independent cinema, throughout the State of Florida, with a second Torchlight Center opening in West Palm Beach during the summer of 2012.

All interviews will take place at The Torchlight Center; location and directions:

ADDRESS: Critchfield Hall / 387 Commerce Boulevard / Midway, Florida, 32343

DIRECTIONS: From campus drive 90 W to Commerce Blvd in Midway (Gadsden County), which is at the stoplight just after passing under I-10. Turn hard right (almost a U-turn) onto Commerce Blvd and stay right as you proceed around a winding road. After you pass two new motels on your left you will see a blue-grey art deco building peeking above bushes on your left. Pull into the driveway and park in the upper-left parking lot. Take walkway to glass doors located on the north side of the building. Please contact Gayle directly on her cell (845) 300-0268 if you have any problem locating the Center.

(Note: The Torchlight Center was originally built for the Allman Brothers Band by Butch Trucks and Gregg Allman as the Pegasus Recording Studio.)

We also work to identify internship opportunities for students to work with members of the esteemed faculty of professionals who teach at the College of Motion Picture Arts, many who are currently working on creative and professional projects in various stages of development, production, and distribution.

Sincerely,

It has been 6 days since I have arrived in Spain and I already feel like I am where I belong. I am here with Dr. Tricia Young and Dr. Sally Sommer doing research into Flamenco, Spanish dance and everyday life as a performance.

Every aspect of the city has its own personality and character. I have explored the city and the beaches, Cathedrals and Basilicas, amazing gardens and sat front row of an authentic and gritty Flamenco show in a dark club where the dancers perform on a stage of tables pushed together!

During my time here I have begun working on a photographic essay of my exploits of the city using Polaroids as my main means of documentation, started doing drawings inspired by the multitude of graffiti that you can find, started working on choreography for a composition influenced by Valencia. I have even managed to make friends with locals who are friends with Valencian choreographers and dance companies. After the Flamenco show I snuck backstage so that I could talk to the performers about setting up dance lessons from the Gitano dancers.

I am excited about what the next six weeks will yield and know that no matter what it may be it will be completely amazing!!! Stay tuned!!!!

We are introducing a new platform for talented young student artists. Streetlance is a new website: an online artist marketplace where people can buy and sell creative mini services!

Like in the old days artists make money on the street with their talents, ideas, skills or services. Streetlance.com is the rebirth of street busking! Our goal is to inspire people to be more creative, so they will find their own way to make money online with their creativity. We believe Streetlance will bridge the gap between the student artists’ expectations and the reality of employment.

Our beta version has been launched a couple of months ago and we are looking for talented young artists to join our community. Fashion designers, writers, songwriters, entertainers, illustrators, painters, performers, dancers, musicians, graphic designers, videographers, typographers, are all welcome to join Streetlance.

Our approach is unique. We offer student artists great opportunities to pitch themselves and make money by doing mini jobs. As freelance artist on Streetlance you can post a pitch and offer a small creative service for a small price which you can finish in for example 15 minutes. Great way to promote yourself, gain experience, make money, build up a portfolio and attract new clients. And by the way, small orders leads to big orders right?

To join our community, student artists must be creative, think out-of-the-box and come up with unique ideas and custom services. Registering is free and you can post unlimited pitches, we even recommend you to do this. There are also tools available which you can use to share your pitch socially in order to attract more buyers.
